Aquaculture in India has gained momentum since 1980. Although India has a long history of aquaculture, aquaculture has evolved into a commercial and profitable venture.

Aquaculture is driven by modern technology and India is the world's largest producer of aquaculture. India has a very long coastline, which is mostly inland. This makes India very suitable for commercial aquaculture. Only a small percentage of this coastal area is used for aquaculture. There is enormous potential for growth in this sector.
